Salvan is from the Batwa Community in Kanungu District in southwestern Uganda. He and his sister were identified for the program after the death of their father.
Salvan graduated from beauty school in 2020. PCAU worked with him to set up a salon in Kampala, but he has now shifted his work to near his home area in the Kanungu District. PCAU is happy he decided to return to Kanungu as he has family there who needs him. PCAU staff also noted that most vocational programs recommend that their graduates stay close to home where they have social connections and people who know them and can serve as mentors. PCAU staff and Road to Hope mentors continue to support Salvan’s “launch” and have helped him acquire a space to rent and the equipment and materials he needs to be successful.
